Always Give Thanks

Nov 12, 2015

"...always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." Ephesians 5:20

Often times, I think November doesn't get it's due. Gone are the busy days at the start of the school year. October and Halloween are behind us and with families foregoing traditional Thanksgiving celebrations in order to stand outside Best Buy and Walmart all night and day on Thanksgiving...even that holiday has turned into little more than a prelude to the "holiday season" (Christmas for us Christ-followers). That being said, let's pause a moment and think about the blessings and theme of this wonderful month.

This week we celebrate Veteran's Day. The day in which we remember, honor and thank those who have dedicated their lives in service to our nation. Their selfless actions and sacrifices (life away from friends, family and home, while putting their own lives in harms way) have kept us safe.

The other is Thanksgiving, the day established to remind our nation to thank God for all of His blessings.

In the verse above, the Apostle Paul calls us to "always give thanks to God the Father for everything...", but notice the signature line on our prayer of thanksgiving...it isn't our own name...but rather "In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."

This week I hope and pray that you will take a moment to remember those who put their lives on the line so that we could be free. In a couple weeks, as we join with our families and friends over turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and all the fixin's, remember to thank the Lord for the many, faithful blessings. We do this not on our own, or for our own sake or with our own will, but rather "...in Jesus name."

Jesus is the one who ultimately put His life on the line for us all. Jesus is the one who willingly sacrificed his safety and security so that we could be free from the shackles of sin. Jesus is the one who was not just a veteran, but a victim and the Savior from our sin. Jesus is the one who battled sin, death and all of the powers of Hell in order to win you and me and make us all free.

This month, give thanks, honor and remember the veterans here on Earth for the part that they've played in our freedoms. Daily thank God for His unending faithfulness and blessings.

Godspeed.
